A artistical research project

Art through artificial intelligence. - Possible?

What are these machines and what do they do that we can't?

The software is our real-time composer, conductor and inexperienced collective member. She challenges us and at the same time sets limits. We gained our first experiences in order to develop concert evenings with this tool.

What happened:

We invited you as participants:

THE LAB – A RESEARCH MEETING IN THE “CENTRALTHEATER” AND “SÜDKIRCHE” in the City of ESSLINGEN near Stuttgart.
A course-like event with research participants works.

The result is a three-part documentation:

To the background:

Our partner, the programmer Aaron Taudt from Stuttgart, Germany, called his specially developed software “machinelearning-musico”. It can be seen and downloaded here.

Intelligent software, more precisely machine learning modules, do nothing that is not given to them. What distinguishes them from humans and animals: They can be reproduced endlessly and their life has no "rhythm" with life and family planning.

What happened:

We are on stage in an interactive triangular relationship between audience, machine and musicians.

After a composed opening piece, we symbolically drop the covers - the improvised music we play is controlled by the "machine".

Trombone – Tilman Schaal

Guitar – Thilo Ruck

Saxophone – Florian Bergman

Narrator – Philipp Falser

But even after the four test performances:

Our machine can't do anything yet, it's an almost empty brain. It needs data to act meaningfully and must "rely on" an expression to be reproducible in order for her "experiences" to be of some use - like a baby that recognizes when mommy smiles.

That's why we are planning some cooperations, exchanges with experts from the AI scene, humanities scholars and musicologists. Thanks to everyone who has been there so far!

Background:

Film evening LAB was supported by the Esslingen cultural office, the Ges. for formative sound experiences in Ba. - Wow.

Research and development was made possible by a micro grant from the Frauenkulturbüro NRW and the "takecare" grant from the performing arts fund to Daniela Petry. takecare is part of the federal program reboot culture.
